When it comes to pressing seams, a general rule is to press all seam allowances toward the darker fabric. This prevents the seam allowances from showing through the lighter fabric on the front of the quilt. There are some exceptions to this rule, most often when multiple pieces come together at the same spot. In these cases, you may need to press the seam allowances in another direction or open to make the back lie flat. If it is necessary to press the seam allowances toward the lighter fabric, slightly trim the darker seam allowance so it is narrower than the lighter one. When two seams will be joined together, press the seam allowances in the opposite directions. When the rows are placed right side together to be sewn, the pressed seams will abut, evenly distributing the bulk of the seam allowance. This also aids in matching pieces within blocks and helps to align rows of blocks in a quilt top.
